It is easy to understand why Willaston FC wellbeing coordinator Karen McColl was recognised with the 2023 Tackle Your Feelings Community Champion award.
Karen was recognised as the national champion from a competitive field of nominees across Australia, attending last year’s AFL Grand Final with her 82-year-old father Barry as a guest of the program.
Led by Karen, the Willaston Football Club place great emphasis on investing in mental health to ensure they are supporting individuals at their club.
“We want people to focus on their mental health because we know that brings about good physical ability and total wellbeing,” she says.
Karen chairs a six-strong wellbeing committee at Willaston, helping the club and its individuals work through any wellbeing and governance issues as they arise.
“You don’t have to have all the answers to be able to support people. It’s just a matter of sitting alongside them and supporting them to help navigate where they need to go.”
Keep an eye out as the program recognises the 2024 Tackle Your Feelings Community Champion over the coming weeks across our social media channels.
